Innovation Voucher Program – Smart Design Voucher

This program provides a voucher that is exchanged with a supplier for access to design research and innovation research related facilities, training, services, advice or expertise.

Funding of up to $25,000 is available.

Applicants are required to make a minimum cash co-contribution from the business, as follows:
- 25% of the voucher amount for Victorian applicants.
- 100% of the voucher amount for non-Victorian applicants.
Who Can Apply
Eligible applicants are small to medium businesses with less than 200 staff including non-Victorian and foreign-owned, looking to undertake work in Victoria with a local Victorian design research supplier/service provider.

Victorian small to medium companies must:
- Employ fewer than 200 employees.
- Be registered in Victoria or employ more than 50% of their employees in Victoria.
- Not currently be involved in litigation with the State Government of Victoria.

Non-Victorian small to medium businesses must:
- Undertake the project with a Victorian supplier.
- Employ less than 200 employees.
- Not currently be involved in litigation with the State Government of Victoria.

Suppliers can be either companies or publicly funded research organisations (e.g. universities, CSIRO and research institutes).
Eligible Activities
Eligible design research should:
- Involve exploring or testing new ideas based on existing or anticipated needs or wants of the user.
- Involve a trans-disciplinary approach to define the project, and subsequently investigate, test and validate the outcomes of the research to maximise its commercial benefit to the company by either meeting or anticipating the user's needs or preferences.
- Include the breadth of design disciplines (such as industrial and engineering design, digital design, graphic design, and materials design, etc), and may overlap with other disciplines such as science, ethnography, and business.
- Commercially focused and demonstrate either the creation, or enhancement, of a product, service or operation through the application of design research capabilities and/or methodologies.

Main Assessment Criteria
The main assessment criteria include:
- Level of design research in project.
- Impact of project on level of design research in Victoria.
- Capability of the business to integrate the design research outputs into its operations, products or services.
- Leveraging Victorian design research and R&D infrastructure or know-how.
- Benefits of the project to other Victorian businesses.
- Impact on business to research collaboration rates.
- The project's likelihood of proceeding without the voucher (the need for funding).
- Impact of the project on business productivity, competitiveness and growth.
